Fiji Outrigger press release

Wailoaloa Beach in Nadi will be the battleground this Easter weekend for the 2010 Wai Tui International Outrigger Championship , the biggest local event for outrigger canoeing. Nearly 150 canoe paddlers from as far offshore as Guam and Hong Kong will converge at Wailoaloa to battle local teams from Suva, Savusavu, Nadi and Vuda.

240 medals are up for grabs at this year’s event, with 42 different races organized over the three days of competition. “We see the Wai Tui International as a great build up for the upcoming Outrigger World Sprints,” said Fiji Outrigger President, David Eyre. “It gives our local paddlers a chance to test their skills against overseas teams and raise the level of their own performance.” This year’s Outrigger World Sprints will be held in Noumea, New Caledonia in May.

Seasoned paddlers as well as Under 19 boys and girls will all be competing at this year’s Wai Tui International. Events include the sprint races, 500 and 1500 meter races, as well as marathons for both the six person canoe (V6) and the single person canoes (V1).

“The short races are exciting for spectators to watch,” said Eyre. “The race course is so close to shore you just sit on the beach and cheer for the team of your choice.” This is the fourth Wai Tui International to be held in Fiji, with each year contributing to the development of current and upcoming paddlers.

Races kick off at 9:00 a.m. on Friday morning, with both the V6 (six person) and V1(one person) sprint events. This is capped off with a Fire Dance Show put on at Traveller’s Beach Resort at 6:00pm and then a buffet dinner where spectators can mingle with the paddlers for some fun and food.

Camaraderie, fun and competition are the hallmarks of the Wai Tui International every year, where grueling races like the marathon are followed by a series of fun events. As one of the only truly Pacific sports, outrigger canoe racing also has cultural aspects that one can only appreciate down at the race site. There will also be Polynesian Dance Group performances on the last night (Sunday) right on the beach.

The final night will feature the closing ceremony and medals presentation as well as Traveller’s Beach Resorts famous BBQ dinner and entertainment until the wee hours of the morning. “If you want to see what outrigger canoe paddling is all about, then the Wai Tui International is really the place to see it first hand,” said Fiji Outrigger President Eyre. “I don’t think anyone will be disappointed.”

For more information on the event, log onto the website www.fijioutrigger.com, or contact Sheena Hughes at secretary@fijioutrigger.com.

Like it or hate it, Fiji is back to regular +12 GMT. Only when you need to synchronize time change that you realize that there are way too many time keeping devices in and around the house.

No more Daylight savings would be good news to paddlers who feel the bite of the morning chill and not having to paddle blind in the dark hours eagerly awaiting a glimpse of sunrise.

Starting from today it will be a whole lot easier to tear away from the comforts of bed and push on for the new day.

A lot of comments i hear welcome the return of the earlier then scheduled return to regular hours by cabinet ministers. Can't help but wonder when or if this will come around once again.

I for one enjoyed the DST period as I would have extra hours in the afternoon to train and meet up with other paddlers whom i would otherwise not see at 5.30am. I'd gladly sacrifice the earlier wake as lets face it whether it be 5, 6 or 8am rise, it will still be difficult regardless. Takes a bit getting used to but after that I'm sweet. I actually made a point to make full use of the avfternoon's this week as the new shorter days dictates a dash to canoe center after work for a few minutes of water time. Envy the tertiary students flexible schedule now.

Everyones clocks will be readjusted by now so don't go to work early lolz ... like anyone would :)

Suva Fun Races (NOCC)

Bula Everyone,

The impromptu regatta held in fairly flat waters was a quiet success for the organisers.

The 4 lane race course saw paddlers from 3 respective clubs battle it out on the waters to claim victories in V1 races, 250 metres and the 1500 metres races.

The regatta gave paddlers a chance to showcase their skills and track their own progress for race times. With the Fiji International to be held in 2 weeks time, this was exactly what all the paddlers needed; to gauge how they are tracking and to see what they need to do better to improve.

Races started on time and V1's were first on the agenda to be tackled!

Womens and mens quailfying rounds were quickly followed by V1 finals which saw Natalya from Kaiwai taking the womens 1st place.

The mens race saw Johnny from Takia power away from behind to take 1st.

Now the fun part of this regatta was the 500 metre race reduced to a 250 dash.

This saw quick races being held and the mens and womens rounds fly through pretty quickly.

1500 metre races were interesting as it was held on a 250 m course. This results in a 5 turn race! This forced the crews to push themselves harder to achieve good race times and results.

After lunch, the marathons were held in sweltering heat and slightly choppy conditions. The race course saw the teams push past the sandbank beacons and to turn at the Nukulau beacon. The only thing more important than water on your canoe was to have sunblock on your face this afternoon! Those that didn't, walked away after the race looking like a sun drenched tourist "kaicolo"ing the local beaches! Red lobster anyone?

Takia and Tafaga would like to send big shout outs to everyone that rocked up today!

We'd also like to send big vinaka's to the time keepers, flag starters and anyone that helped out. Also a huge shout out to the men that was at the site at 6 am diving and setting up the race flags and buoys!

Vinaka all! Hope you enjoyed the races as much as we enjoyed running it!

20th of March Regatta-Nadi CANCELED

Subject: Re: 20th of March Regatta-Nadi

Hi everyone,

This weekends regatta has been CANCELLED. Yesterday i sent out an email with the race draws attached. I had asked clubs to confirm their club entries. The only club that responded to that email was Takia Canoe Club. I must say that FO is very disappointed with this sort of feedback. And as a result we have lost out on having one more regatta before the upcoming 'Waitui International!'

In future it would be appreciated if FO club reps responded to emails. It isant fair on your club members or other clubs if they have to suffer because those 'responsible' forgot to reply/confirm or respond. It dosent set us on the right path for the rest of the year.

With that said, goodluck with your build up towards the 'Waitui Int'l' next month. We hope to see some great competition come April.

Vinaka.

Sheena Hughes

Secretary

Fiji Outrigger

www.fijioutrigger.com

On 17/03/2010, at 5:08 PM, Sheena Hughes wrote:

Hi everyone,

Last weekends regatta has now been moved to this weekend (19th march). There have been some interests expressed in holding this final regatta as its the last one before the waitui international. However, with that said, FO needs confirmation of your clubs participation this weekend.

Attached is the race draws. Please confirm your clubs entries. Please approve with your club members and send me back changes in red. These changes must be sent through by 5pm tomorrow afternoon and no later. Please make sure that if your paddlers are registered that they turn up on race day, if not, highlight them in red so that i can take them out of the race.

Also, just to inform those who occupy the NCC site. New locks will be put on the gate and container this afternoon. Each club will be issued 2 copies of these keys. They are non-duplicable so please do not lose it as the expense will be yours should you require another copy.

  Thanx.

  <race> </race>

  Sheena Hughes

Secretary

  Fiji Outrigger

www.fijioutrigger.com

The public is advised that a curfew is in place and to adhere to the warnings given out by authorities. The curfew was imposed at mid-night yesterday due to the impending hurricane. Police spokesperson Sgt Atunaisa Sokomuri says they imposed the curfew to ensure the safety of the public. “Themain reason behind imposing the curfew from midnight is to control themovement of the people and also to ensure the safety of the public. As we have noticed in the past whenever there is a situation like thispeople are still moving around unnecessarily and they lose their livesor property.” He adds only approved vehicles from the National Emergency Operation Centre will be allowed to move around. All vehicles will have to be registered and approved at National Emergency Operation Command Centre. The list of registered and approved vehicle will then be compiled and given to police command center Registered vehicle would be issued a pass, labeled DISMAC, with official stamp. For EOC at Divisional and District, divisional commissioners and districtofficers are empowered to grant pass for their vehicles that would beengaged in Hurricane Tomas operation.

Excerpt from FBC

http://www.radiofiji.com.fj/fullstory.php?id=26417
